So I took my bus to Ben the mechanic for what could be my last oil change by a paid person. I hope to learn to do it myself. Anyway, I told him my flashers weren't working and so he fiddled with the wires a bit but couldn't get it to work either. Granted he only had a couple of minutes and I didn't want to pay him $60 dollars an hour to fiddle. As for the other parts of the bus, he said everything looked really good and solid. Just had him change the oil and no tune-up was required since it had one just before I bought it. Anyway, I was driving home from NE POrtland and decided just to pull the flashers for the heck of and wouldn't you know it.. they worked. Hmm, very strange but good. I thought. Until I realized whatever Ben did to the flashers, it screwed up my turn signals. So now they didn't work. So I got home and figured out how to access the switch. Basically you take the flasher handle out and use a straight screwdriver to twist the holding knob, with then unscrews the switch behind. What you end up with is a maze of wires that looks like this.

Well I figured something just wasn't right.. so I got on the Samba board, posted that picture and asked for advice. One guy sent a wiring diagram for the flasher unit.

Another friend of mine, Jasan, actually went to the trouble of removing his switch and taking this picture of it.

Well I noticed on Jasan, he had a red wire on the side.. which is contant current. Which would explain why my flashers only worked with the ignition key turned. And would explain why now my turn signals don't work.. because the switch apparently needs to power connections. One for flashers, the other for turn signals. So I dug in the dash and found the missing red wire, connected it and it worked. For about a minute. Until I shorted out something putting the switch back in the dash. Luckily it was only a fuse.. and after I replaced that everything worked perfectly!!! So now finally my flashers are fixed.
To end this blog entry.. here's an ad I found of my exact model camper from 1979. Cute isn't it?
